January Irish arts jobs & events

january 2019

a case of the januaries

Happy January! Today we kick off another term here at UCD – we’re especially pleased to be starting Semester 2 of the MA in Cultural Policy and Arts Management with our new permanent lecturer Dr Annette Clancy on board.

For your cultural calendar this week & next, events and announcements of note include:

  • Culture Ireland’s ‘Global Ireland’ conference in Dublin Castle takes place on Thursday the 24th, with an interesting (and rather starry) array of speakers commenting on Ireland’s global cultural reputation.
  • Tradfest begins on Weds. the 23rd, with one of its strongest lineups I’ve seen!
  • Bauhaus Effects is a major conference on the Bauhaus co-hosted by our School, which sold out in an eyeblink! Get yourself on the list for returns if 20th c. modernism is your jam: this is a fabulous event.
  • Francois Matarasso’s new book ‘A Restless Art’ (free to download!) about ‘the principles, practice, and history of participatory art’ has just been published: his work on arts participation is always provocative and well worth a read.

I’ve just spent the afternoon updating the jobs page with more than fifty new opportunities in the arts & cultural sector – lots to peruse and consider there, including plum roles at the Butler Gallery, ACNI, Macnas, Science Gallery, Irish Heritage Trust, etc. A few positions close ASAP, so get cracking!

Back to business: a new semester, and lots of new arts/cultural jobs!

I hope all my readers had a wonderful summer – we’re back in the thick of it now here at UCD, with our new term just begun last week. This year in my school (Art History & Cultural Policy) I’m working with both MA classes (30 students in Arts Management & Cultural Policy; 14 in our new MA Art History: Curating & Collections) in addition to the annual crop of undergraduates, so it’s going to be a busy academic year! Although both classes are full for this academic year, if you’re interested in either of our programmes feel free to get in touch with me.

Also worth noting: this year’s competition for PhD funding via the Irish Research Council is now open, with a closing date of 1 November. UCD is running an information session on applying for these TOMORROW – 20 September, in case you’re interested… I am always happy also to speak with folks who have ambitions to pursue a PhD in art history, cultural history, arts management or cultural policy: contact me for a personal guide I’ve developed to doing a PhD, and an informal chat about what the right fit for you might be.

The Ireland Fulbright Commission is also currently accepting applications for a number of fellowships at different career stages (going to and from the US/Ireland): http://www.fulbright.ie/

For all your job-seekers out there – I’ve just updated the jobs page with more than sixty new opportunities in the arts & cultural sector across the island. The range and type are pretty extraordinary — but it’s worth mentioning that the National Gallery of Ireland is currently hiring for ten new roles; and the nationwide Music Generation programme is hiring six new officers across the country. Lots of closing dates are in the coming days and weeks, so time to get cracking if you’re on the hunt!

We’re hiring! UCD Arts Management & Cultural Policy

ucd_brandmark_colourCome work with us! I’m happy to announce we have begun recruitment of a new, permanent, half-time Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Arts Management and Cultural Policy. We’re looking for an academic to join our staff with expertise in management or arts management, who will contribute to running the MA in Arts Management & Cultural Policy, one of the longest-running and most successful MAs of its kind in Ireland and Europe. Candidates must have a PhD or be close to completion. Salary is €33,148 – €58,178 (0.5 FTE, below the bar). As outlined in the job spec, the duties of the successful candidate will include, but will not necessarily be limited to, the following:

  • Undertaking and publishing high quality research and scholarship in their areas of specialism.
  • Playing an active role in the School’s research activities.
  • Contributing actively to teaching programmes as directed by both the Director and the Head of School. This will involve module design and delivery, examination and assessment, quality assurance and enhancement, and associated administration.
  • Working across a number of modules to develop students’ understanding of the theory and practice of management
  • Supervising research dissertations
  • Participating on school/college committees and boards.
  • Undertaking such other appropriate duties consistent with the contract of employment.

Deadline is 21 August 2018.

Full details of the post, and the method of application, can be found here: https://www.ucd.ie/workatucd/jobs/ (apologies for the clunky HR interface – just search under Art History & Cultural Policy).

I’m away on annual leave at the minute, but should you have questions about the role, please contact my colleague Pat Cooke.

p.s. the general jobs page has been updated for August!

60+ new Irish arts jobs just added

David Shrigley, 2011

A tough last few weeks for folks in the arts, with the ugly spectre of censorship appearing in connection with numerous arts events & artworks connected to the Repeal the 8th campaign. Feels like it’s time to re-visit the arms-length concept of public funding, and how/when it applies to different forms of organizations. Time also to clarify the role and practices of the Charity Regulator, which is playing fast and loose with interpretations of its mandate.

Anyhow.

In sunnier news, this might be a record: I’ve just updated the blog with more than 60 new jobs & other opportunities in the arts and cultural sector. It’s worth mentioning several new listings are related to a major injection of £1.5 million into Northern Ireland as part of its ‘Making the Future’ multi-institution consortium project, which is funding projects and positions at NMNI, Nerve Centre, PRONI, and the Linen Hall Library. Dublin Theatre Festival is also recruiting for numerous seasonal roles; the new Tenement Museum in Dublin is hiring a Director; Belfast Exposed is hiring a Director; and the National Gallery of Ireland is hiring several collections-related roles. Also offering multiple positions currently are the Irish Film Institute and the Irish Architecture Foundation.

All details etc are in the jobs page! In the meantime, dust off the sunglasses and soak up some sunshine this bank holiday weekend…

New Irish arts jobs & opportunities

Finally emerging from being snowed under (literally and figuratively), with a fresh update of the blog & lots of new job opportunities! Among the highlights are an Arts Officer Post at ACNI; the Country Director for the British Council in Ireland; Production and Development Coordinator at the Irish Film Board; Performing Groups Manager at the Royal Irish Academy of Music; and lots of volunteer and intern positions (including the West Cork Music Festival; Screen Directors’ Guild; and EVA International).

A few other opportunities worth singling out:

  • Fancy a paid work placement in Spain (includes flights, accommodation, subsistence allowance, and language classes)? Capacity Ireland is offering a Creative Industries vocational course with Erasmus+ funded work placements in Seville, with an April 2018 start – deadline has been extended to 19 March.
  • Interested in further study? The deadline for NUI PhD funding (can be used at any Irish university) has also been extended to 9 April. NUI postdoctoral funding deadline is 20 April. UCC is also offering a new PhD scholarship to research the historical and social perspectives on Cork Opera House; deadline is 30 April.
  • Are you an international student searching for funding? The Government of Ireland is offering generous 1-year scholarships for non-EU/EEA students which can be used towards taught MA and also PhD programmes. Deadline is 23 March.
  • Are you an arts organization keen to carry out a substantial piece of research? Come talk to us at UCD about the IRC Employment Based scheme, which involves co-sponsoring a PhD Researcher who combines employment with research at a host organization. We’re currently co-hosting one of these researchers in our School, and are always happy to discuss details of how to apply to this funding scheme (which is under-subscribed by folks in the arts/NGO sectors).

Finally… we’re heading into the time of year when we receive lots of enquiries about pursuing UCD’s MA in Arts Management & Cultural Policy; the new MA in Art History, Collections, and Curating; and our PhD programmes in either Art History or Cultural Policy. Feel free to drop me a line if you’d like to have a chat about any of these, as places often fill up quickly!
