Are you a current or recent postgrad with an interest in museum studies? I’m hiring a research assistant for a part-time, 5 month post, assisting with the Irish Research Council – funded project Museum Survey 2015, undertaken with the Irish Museums Trust and the Irish Museum Association:

A part-time (3 days per week) Research Assistant is currently sought for the Irish Research Council-funded project ‘A Survey of Museums in Ireland’ (2015), led by Principal Investigator Dr Emily Mark-FitzGerald, in partnership with the Irish Museums Trust and the Irish Museums Association. The Research Assistant will be a key part of the research team responsible for conducting and delivering the report.

The principal aim of this research project is to provide a comprehensive, up-to-date, and broad survey of the Irish museums sector and its activities (all-island). The survey will collate self-reported museum data on general information (size, location, facilities, opening hours, etc.); programmes and activities; governing authority; staffing and training; budgets, funding and development activity; collections size and scope; access and education services; and visitor data (including tourist and local/national visitors). The survey will include community, county, regional and national public museums, north and south.

Hours and location of work are flexible, but the Research Assistant will be primarily based at the premises of the Irish Museums Association (Earlsfort Terrace), working alongside the IMA’s Director of Operations Gina O’Kelly, and reporting to Dr Emily Mark-FitzGerald (UCD School of Art History and Cultural Policy). The schedule of work will vary over the five-month duration of the project (July – November 2015), and will be agreed with the Research Assistant in advance of commencement. The flexibility of this post, and opportunity for research and publication experience, may especially suit a current or recent postgraduate student.

Now in paperback: Commemorating the Irish Famine

LUP_coverI’m very pleased to share that my book Commemorating the Irish Famine: Memory and the Monument (Liverpool University Press) is now out in paperback, after going through two hardback runs! I’ve been so delighted with the reception of the book; in the past year alone I’ve had the opportunity to speak about this work across Ireland, and in the UK, US, Canada, Netherlands, Sweden, and Turkey.

If you happen to be in Edinburgh this week — I’ll be giving another talk as part of the Migration, Museums and Memorials conference happening at the National Museum of Scotland from 11-13 February. I’ll also be part of a plenary panel speaking to the theme of Irish Studies and the Dynamics of Memory: Transitions and Transformations at Radboud University in the Netherlands, from 31 March – 2 April. The International Network of Irish Famine Studies is run from Radboud (I’m one of their core members) and we’re also meeting from 23-24 April — the associated CFP has been extended to 15 February, in case you’re interested! Finally in mid-June I’ll be part of the Irish Famine Summer School in Strokestown, Co Roscommon, speaking about Famine memory and legacies of migration.
